The Italian Ministry of the Interior Issued a "Circolare"
October 25, 2024
The Italian Ministry of the Interior issued a “circolare” a couple of weeks ago that has tremendously affected many dual citizenship cases.
The circolare states that at if the time an Italian became a citizen of, e.g., the United States, the next generation born in the US were minors (under 18 or 21, depending on the year of citizenship), that ancestor did not pass Italian citizenship on to
the next generation.
In the United States, we are referring to this directive as the “minor rule”.
If you are not sure if your case falls within this “minor” rule, it may be a good idea to talk with an attorney in Italy who practices in this area or talk with a competent consultant or genealogist.
